The Right One

Choosing the Right Horse

Step 1

Before getting a horse you need to choose the style you want to ride such as western or English. English riding would be fancy and posh with decorations and including wearing a helmet. While western is more casual and freestyle. For me I like English riding more than Western so it's up to you what you like.

Step 2

It's the fun part you get to choose the color of your horse.Even though colors are not as important as the characteristic of your horse most owners like to choose the color of the horse that they would like. There are so many combinations of colors. You can go to this link to look at some colors there are.

Step 3

Test it before you buy it. You should always test your horse before you buy it. It's not only about how pretty your horse is but you need to be comfortable ridding the horse and knows that it can do what you tell it to do. This is the most important thing.

Step 4

Select a discipline. You already choose the style your riding now you have to choose the discipline. The style of riding there are many events and discipline. For English:

-Dressage

-Showjumping

-3 day event

-Hack

-Hunt Seat

-Equitation

-Show Riding

For Western:

-Western Pleasure

-Western Horsemanship

-Equitation

-Trail

-Reining

-Western Riding

-Showmanship

-Western Halter

There are also events that are neither in Western or English Riding such as,

Polo

Cross Polo

Cross country

Vaulting (Gymnastics on Horseback)

Gymkhana Riding

Mounted Games

Step 5

Here are some recommendations of breeds of horses for your dicipline.

-Showjumping/Cross Country:  Stock Horses through to Appaloosas to Pony breeds and Mustangs. (Don't ride HOT horses if you are a beginner  because jumping can increase their excitement level.)

-Western: The western breeds are Appaloosa, Paint, Quarter Horse,

-Dressage: The ponies or horses that suits with dressage best are TB's, Warm bloods, Lipizzaner's and Connemara's

-Gymnastic Riding: These horses are best to do gymnastic on Lipizzaner's, Connemara, Percheron, Appaloosa, Paint etc.

Getting to know them

Breeds

Horses have many different breeds and here are some famous breeds, starting off with:

     The Mustang

The name mustang comes from the world mesteno, which means wild or stray. The mustang would be fully grown at the age of 4-7. It has very strong legs and hooves compare to the other horses. This is because it has to be able to canter without shoes on any kind of surface.

     Cayuse Indian pony

This pony has a very fuzzy history about it but it is believed to be from France. The pony is small and stocky with high wither and very a long cannon bone. It is mostly used for children's riding because it is small and easy to ride.

     Florida Cracker Horse

The Florida Cracker Horse has lots of names such as the Florida horse, Woods Pony, Indian Pony, Prairie Pony or the Florida Cow Pony. This pony is very rare breed, it is very small, only 13.5 hands high. It has an elegant head with lively eyes. The back is short making it small, but this is a very alert horse with  so much power. These horses come in very unique colors, but are mostly solid or gray.

     American Quarter Horse

The Quarter horse is named after a competition when it ran a quarter mile. The Quarter horse has short head broad head. This horse has a powerful bow that gives the saddle a good base. It has a short back and have a nice disposition. This breed is very intelligent, which helps it learn faster than other breeds.

     Appaloosa

This breed has a very good character and has strong hind quarter and good legs. It has hard hooves and an elegant head that makes the Appaloosa the Nez Perce wanted. The most common color for this breed is a dark body with white spots, but there are many more patterns.
